Two men from a Fathers4Justice splinter group have scaled Westminster Abbey in a Father’s Day protest.

The pair, named as Stevenage man Bobby Smith and James Dennis, of Gloucestershire, hung banners from scaffolding at the top of the iconic central London church.

One read “parental alienation” and accused “the evil courts” of “child abuse”.

They were identified as belonging to New Fathers4Justice – which is not connected with the similarly-named fathers’ rights charity.

Another banner bore the words “give me back Elmo” – the name of the party Mr Smith formed to run against David Cameron in Witney last month.

The 33-year-old polled 37 votes to the Prime Minister’s 35,201, claiming Mr Cameron had “ignored” him for “the whole campaign”.

New Fathers4Justice said in a statement: “Father’s Day is an emotional time for fathers denied access to their children.”

‘New Fathers 4 Justice’ Activists Bobby Smith, 33, from Stevenage and James Dennis from Bishops Cleeve, have this evening scaled Westminster Abbey in a fathers day protest.

 According to a press released issued by the group, New Fathers 4 Justice (NF4J) is a splinter group and not associated with Matt O’Connor or Fathers4Justice UK

A spokesman said: “Loads of tourists are taking pictures. They’ve closed the gates and a helicopter is hovering overhead.

“Bobby has his ‘Give Me Back Elmo’ banner ….which are the first two letters of his two daughters names EL and MO.

“Fathers day is an emotional time for fathers denied access to their children.”

The group said Bobby Smith from Stevenage and James Dennis from Bishops Cleeve, Gloucestershire, have scaled the church, opposite the Palace of Westminster in central London.

The group, which campaigns for the rights of fathers to see their children, said: “Father’s Day is an emotional time for fathers denied access to their children.”

The men unfurled three banners on top of scaffolding which stood against one side of the building.

One read “Parental Alienation” another read “Give me back Elmo” and another stated “Daddy’s not giving up on you Elmo x x x”.

Three uniformed police officers stood at the foot of the Abbey watching the protesters.

And bemused tourists stopped and took photos of the sight.
